Packed Lunch Containers That Survive a Backpack: 5 Picks

Updated September 29, 2026 · Affiliate disclosure

A lunch container has one job that matters and it is not holding food. It is holding food upside down, in a backpack, under a laptop, for four hours, without dressing ending up on the laptop. Most containers pass the kitchen-counter test and fail the bag test, because a snap lid without a gasket is only watertight when it is sitting flat.

This shortlist is five pieces from OXO's Prep & Go range, which all share the same closing system: a silicone gasket in the lid and two clips that lock down after you press the air out. We compared them on how they handle the three things that ruin a packed lunch, leaks, soggy greens and warm food, and on whether they stack in a fridge on Sunday night. They are plastic, not glass, which is the right call for anything that gets carried. Each one solves a different lunch, so the right pick depends on what you actually pack.

#1 · Best all-round lunch box

OXO Prep & Go 4.1-Cup Divided Container

Check OXO for today’s price and availability.

The 4.1-cup divided container is the one to own if you only own one. Three compartments take rice and a protein and a vegetable, or soup on one side and salad on the other, and each compartment has its own silicone gasket in the lid so sauces stay where you put them. Two clips lock the whole thing. It stacks with the rest of the range in the fridge, so Sunday prep for five days takes one shelf. The compartments are fixed, so you cannot make one bigger for a one-dish lunch, and the 4.1-cup total is a lunch, not a dinner. Microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe.

  • ✓ Three sealed compartments
  • ✓ Stacks with the rest of the range
  • ✓ Microwave and dishwasher safe
  • – Fixed compartment sizes
  • – Lunch-sized, not dinner-sized

#2 · Best for a real sandwich

OXO Prep & Go Sandwich Container

The sandwich container is a square box sized for two slices of store-bought bread with a tall filling, and its only purpose is to stop the sandwich getting crushed and the tomato getting everywhere. The single gasket and two clips make it as leakproof as the rest of the range, which matters more than it sounds once there is a juicy filling involved. It does one thing, so it is the wrong buy if your lunches vary. It also will not take a long roll or a full wrap unfolded, and there is no room for a side, which is what the snack-and-dip cup below is for.

  • ✓ Sized for standard bread with tall fillings
  • ✓ Sealed lid stops tomato juice leaking
  • ✓ Light enough for a kid's bag
  • – Single-purpose
  • – No room for a side

OXO Prep & Go Salad Container

#3 · Best for salad

OXO Prep & Go Salad Container

Soggy salad comes from dressing and wet toppings sitting on greens for hours. This container puts a shallow removable tray above the greens for the chicken, the cheese or the dressing cup, so nothing touches the leaves until you tip it in at your desk. The lid seals with the same gasket and clips, and the two levels mean it also works as soup-and-crackers or oatmeal-and-toppings. The trade-off is depth: the tray takes headroom, so a big salad has to be packed loosely, and the container is taller than the divided box when stacked. If you never eat salad from a container, skip it.

  • ✓ Tray keeps toppings off the greens
  • ✓ Works for soup and crackers too
  • ✓ Same leakproof lid
  • – Tray reduces salad capacity
  • – Taller than the others when stacked

OXO Prep & Go Snack & Dip Container - 1.6 Cups/0.4 L

#4 · Best for snacks and dip

OXO Prep & Go Snack & Dip Container

The snack-and-dip container is 1.6 cups in total with a small lidded cup inside for hummus, dressing or yogurt, and space around it for carrots, crackers or fruit. It is the piece that stops a kid's lunch bag from becoming a hummus bag, and it works just as well for an adult afternoon snack. The window in the lid shows what is inside without opening it, which helps in a full fridge. It is small: this is a side, not a meal, and the inner cup holds a couple of tablespoons, so it is not the container for a big portion of anything liquid.

  • ✓ Dip stays separate until you eat
  • ✓ Clips and gasket: truly leakproof
  • ✓ Small enough to pack daily
  • – Snack size only, not a lunch

OXO Prep & Go Ice Pack Set

#5 · The piece everyone forgets

OXO Prep & Go Ice Pack Set

None of the containers above keeps food cold, and a lunch that sits at room temperature until one o'clock is the actual risk in this list. The ice pack set is two flat, dual-compartment packs that bend around a container instead of sitting beside it as a brick, so they cool the whole box and take no extra room in the bag. Freeze them overnight, wrap them around the lunch in the morning, wipe them down at night. They are hand wash only and, like every ice pack, they lose their cold over a long hot afternoon, so a bag with some insulation still helps.

  • ✓ Folds around the container
  • ✓ Two packs, no bulk
  • ✓ Reusable indefinitely
  • – Hand wash only
  • – An insulated bag still helps in summer

If you pack one thing every day, buy the divided container and stop there; it handles most hot-and-cold combinations. Sandwich people want the sandwich box, salad people want the tray version, and the snack-and-dip cup is for kids or for the afternoon gap. Whatever you pick, add the ice pack set, because a leakproof container with warm chicken in it is still a bad lunch. The email at the bottom of the page sends one shortlist a week.

Questions people ask

How do I get the lid to seal properly?
Press firmly in the middle of the lid until you hear air escape, then close the two side clips. If you clip first and press second, the lid can bow and the gasket will not seat. The gasket lifts out for washing; when you put it back, press the four corners in first and then the long sides.
Are these containers microwave and dishwasher safe?
The containers are microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe. Vent the lid before microwaving by unclipping it, and let hot food cool a little before sealing it, because a hot sealed container creates a vacuum that makes the lid hard to open later. Ice packs are hand wash only.
Will a full-size sandwich fit in the sandwich container?
It is sized for standard store-bought sandwich bread with a tall filling, so a regular sandwich fits without squashing. Bakery loaves, ciabatta rolls and wraps folded in half generally fit; a large sub or a baguette section will not. For anything longer, the 5-cup rectangle in the same range is the better shape.
